Burlesque’s renaissance spells good news for circus performances.

Burlesque is back. The upmarket form of striptease – which admittedly focuses on ‘tease’ rather than ‘strip’ – has experienced something of a renaissance since emerging in the US during the 30s and 40s, with its latest incarnation featuring a greater range of performance styles.

Influenced by music hall, cabaret, striptease, minstrel and comedy styles, American burlesque’s success was such that it soon spread across the Atlantic. Despite suffering a demise in the 70s and 80s, burlesque has been revived for a new generation, with Dita Von Teese and her stiletto heels acting as the figurehead for the new movement.

But it’s not all fishnets and fake eyelashes – performances usually incorporate doses of satire and comedy, while others aim to raise awareness of global issues and charities’ causes. Behind every burlesque performance, though, is a story.

From Alabama to Amsterdam, burlesque has re-established itself as one of the most exciting forms of performance art. It may be cheekier and more titillating than your average circus act, but it’s as much about choreography, athleticism and skill as teasing the audience, which may explain why crowds’ make-up is so varied, and why it so loved among an entirely new generation.

At International Circus Stardust Entertainment, we’ve been keen to embrace audiences’ appetites for ‘neo burlesque’. That’s why we offer a variety of burlesque circus acts – from belly dancing and acro dancing to fire eating and hand balancing – as part of our performances. So if you’ve got an event to organise, burlesque may offer something that little bit extra to really wow the crowds.

The third World Circus Day, which will showcase circuses from all four corners of the globe, will be taking place Saturday, 21st April.

The event, organised by Monaco-based Federation Mondiale du Cirque, is returning for the third time after highly successful events last year and in 2010.

Families are being encouraged to celebrate all things circus on the day, with performers from the US, Australia, France, Germany, India and Sweden organising shows at venues all over the world.

Among the UK’s participants are the British Juggling Convention, Albert & Friends Instant Circus and Circus Starr.

In addition to world-class performances, families are given the support they need to host their own circus-themed events, take their children to one of the day’s circus performances or dress up in fancy dress as a clown or circus master.

Princess Stepanie of Monaco said the magic of the circus is down to its ability to “inspire and amaze”.

“It builds co-operation, trust and confidence,” she commented.

“Circus makes the impossible possible; the ordinary magical. Circus is the best of art, music, drama, comedy and athletics in one extraordinary experience.”

Among the day’s performances will be parades, book launches, special one-off shows and workshops for children. Attendees who dress up in circus-themed fancy dress will be granted free admission to certain events.

At International Circus Stardust Entertainment, we’re fortunate enough to work with some of the most talented circus acts and performers in the world. While we like to think we’re at the cutting edge of the circus industry, we also think it’s important to pay homage to the circus’s history.

So, where does this unique and universally-enjoyed entertainment pastime have its roots? Well, its origins can be traced back to Ancient Rome, where circus performers entertained the crowds before staged battles, equestrian shows and the infamous chariot races. Part of its appeal lay in its audience – it was the only event in the ancient capital where men and women could sit together.

The world’s first circus was Circus Maximus, the venue of which was made entirely from wood. In its heyday it attracted 250,000 people – its popularity later giving rise to the establishment of rival circuses Flaminus and Neronis.

Sadly, though, the fall of the Roman Empire led to a lull in the circus’s development. Showmen tapped into the nostalgia for the Roman circus by taking performances around Europe’s fairgrounds, while gypsies honed their skills following their arrival in Britain in the 16th century.

It wasn’t until the late 18th century that the circus, in the modern sense of the word, started to achieve notoriety. Philip Astley is the figure credited with the first successful modern circus – his show in January 1768 encouraged the later addition of tightrope walkers, trained animals, jugglers and clowns.

The word ‘circus’ wasn’t used until 1782, when Charles Dibdin, working in partnership with Charles Hughes, one of Astley’s rivals, opened the Royal Circus in London. Such an innovative form of audience entertainment proved a huge hit, spawning the opening of circuses in other major cities in Britain and the continent.

Circus’s most recent incarnation is the contemporary circus. Having originated in Canada, Australia and France in the 1970s, it combines techniques synonymous with the theatre and traditional circus skills. Character and story development feature heavily, as do the overall aesthetics.

This is something we at International Circus Stardust Entertainment appreciate. Our performances feature the latest in visual technology – from stunning fire and ice shows to dazzling lasers and lighting effects. These visuals complement the performances of our acts, from amazing aerial acts and acrobats to clowns and contortionists.

The circus has certainly come a long way since its relatively humble beginnings in Ancient Rome, and we look forward to help shaping its exciting future – in whatever form it takes.

Las Vegas – the city in the Nevada desert famed for being ‘the entertainment capital of the world‘. Think of the resort and what springs to mind? Casinos? Bright lights? Huge, illuminated hotels? Well, quite possibly – but Las Vegas is also one of the most exciting places in the world to enjoy the circus.

La Reve – The Dream, Cirque du Soleil and the Blue Man group are just a selection of the circus performances visitors to Las Vegas can sample – and here at International Circus Stardust Entertainment, we’re proud to have played our part in some of the dazzling productions.

That’s right; some of our world-class circus performers – from hand balancing to contortionists and roller skaters to mesmerising illusions – are currently working their magic on the Las Vegas strip and its glamorous surroundings, wowing hundreds of audience members in the process.

We’re proud of our team’s involvement at one of the world’s most famous entertainment resorts, and if audience reactions are anything to go by, they’re doing a fantastic job; which is great news for the international circus industry – both professionals and enthusiasts.

Of course, that doesn’t mean circus enthusiasts in the UK have to miss out. Our team of Las Vegas circus acts really are jet setters, so they’ll be back in Blighty before you know it, delighting domestic audiences of all ages – certainly something to look forward to if this cold weather is getting you down!

January 2012

Happy New Year from everyone at International Circus Stardust Entertainment – we hope you enjoyed the festive period and wish you a prosperous and successful 2012.

It’s set to be an exciting year for everyone involved in the circus – from our world-famous international collection of circus acts to our audiences across the country.

Central to 2012 is this summer’s London Olympics and here at International Circus Stardust Entertainment we’re doing our bit to get into the spirit of the Games. This year, we’ll be launching our special Olympic-themed performances, which will feature some of the planet’s finest circus performers – from jugglers and aerial gymnasts to fire breathers and acrobats.

We specialise in bespoke performances, which can be tailored to suit any audience and performance space. So, if you’re thinking of organising an Olympic-themed spectacle this year – no matter how big or small – how about injecting some circus-themed magic into proceedings?

With our range of exceptionally talented performers, you can be sure that your audience will be treated to a performance they’re unlikely to forget in a hurry – and they’ll certainly be in a position to get even more excited about this summer’s London Games.

It’s not just the Olympics that we tailor our performances to, though – we have them to suit every theme and occasion, including Moulin Rouge and Cirque to Christmas and Halloween. This summer, however, it’s all about London 2012 – and with events kicking off on 27th July, there’s plenty of time to get into the swing of things (in a very literal sense, as far as our aerobatics team is concerned).

The Olympic schedule lasts until 12th August, but London 2012 doesn’t end there. The Paralympic Games begin shortly afterwards, on 29th August, and continue until 9th September.

With both events now very much on the horizon, we’d like to wish all our customers a very happy 2012, and we look forward to getting into the Olympic spirit with you.

Merry Christmas from International Circus Stardust Entertainment.

At International Circus Stardust Entertainment, we feature world-class circus talent from all corners of the globe from fire eaters and stilt walkers to jugglers and human cannon balls.

It’s been a busy year for the leading circus entertainment agency, it was recently confirmed that we had become an associate member of The Agents Association, an organisation that allows us to be recognised by both Equity and the Variety and Light Entertainment Council.

As 2011 draws to a close, we’d like to wish all our clients, artists, performers and circus directors a very merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

November 2011

International Circus Stardust Entertainment has become an associate member of The Agents Association, the agency has announced.

The Agents Association, which represents an array of entertainment agencies, is the biggest professional trade organisation of its kind in the world.

By becoming an associate member, International Circus Stardust Entertainment is recognised by both Equity and the Variety and Light Entertainment Council.

The former has greatly influenced the entertainment industry’s direction thanks to its work enforcing professional standards, while the latter specialises in the promotion of good practice among entertainers and professional performers.

Shaun Hull, International Circus Stardust Entertainment’s owner, said “The development would benefit the company, its clients and performers.”

“The Agents Association is on hand to give us practical help and advice on the day to day running of our agency as well as keeping us up to date with current legislation,” he commented.

“We will be recognised by Equity, The Variety and Light Entertainment Council, Association of Circus Proprietors and many more entertainment organisations, which will help us boost our profile as well as improve our operations.”

The Agents Association was established in 1927 and offers support to its members in addition to promoting their interests. Members are offered guidance in the day-to-day running of an entertainment agency and access to a forum to interact with other members and entertainment organisations.

More than 400 entertainment agencies benefit from the membership scheme, with these concentrating in a diverse range of specialisms – from pop and rock artists to television personalities and cabaret stars to theatre performers.

Circus acts being embraced as part of corporate entertainment packages

If you’ve been given responsibility to host a corporate entertainment event, it can be tricky knowing where to turn – after all, you want to impress your guests with something truly memorable. So, why not do away with the same old tired formats and embrace something truly exciting and innovative – a night out at the circus?

By utilising the services of International Circus Stardust Entertainment, you can bring the magic of the circus to life. The circus is no longer the preserve of family entertainment – with circus performers ranging from stilt walkers to fire eaters and human statues to showgirls, you can be sure to impress your corporate clients with a wide-ranging and truly spectacular repertoire.

When you think of circus acts, what springs to mind? Clowns, trapeze artists and human cannonballs, perhaps? While all three are something of circus institutions, circus entertainment has grown to become more varied – and best of all, each event can be tailored according to a client’s requirements; both in terms of performance and venue.

It’s not just about the performers, either. International Circus Stardust Entertainment events consider aesthetics, too – so expect state-of-the-art fire and light shows to complement the world-class performers. Large events can particularly benefit from pyrotechnics, while expert fire performers consistently wow the crowds – particularly in summertime.

A huge advantage of a corporate circus entertainment package is that performances can be seasonal. With the office Christmas party season only a couple of months away, you can really impress your colleagues with a festive party not to be forgotten. Imagine the look of delight on your guests’ faces when a frosted hand reaches out to greet them – and that’s before the performance even begins.

If you’re about to arrange an evening of corporate entertainment, isn’t it about time you embraced the magic of the circus?

Circus acts and circus performers: Perfect Halloween entertainment

Circus acts are set to become a more popular Halloween theme this year as people all over the world tire of the same old October 31st entertainment.

International Circus Stardust Entertainment is leading the way in terms of Halloween-related circus performers, with the circus entertainment agency staging a number of spooky themed performances during the run-up to the big event.

Spectacular aerial acts, creepy stilt walkers, scary living statues, ghoulish human statues and eerie costumes are all part of an evening’s Halloween entertainment, with the agency’s events able to fit any type of venue – no matter what size the audience.

Shaun Hull, the man behind International Circus Stardust Entertainment, said audiences can expect performances to be “fantastically gruesome. Our ghosts and ghouls parade around the circus, all with frightfully delightful ways to entertain. Watch on in amazement as our daring fire eaters and fire breathers heat up the night.”

While circus hire is a superb form of entertainment in its own right, a themed night of circus entertainment is sure to leave audiences spellbound – particularly when more of us are looking for alternative, quirkier Halloween entertainment.

What’s more, it’s never been more straightforward to organise. Because agencies like International Circus Stardust Entertainment are so flexible in their entertainment offerings, there’s really no excuse not to embrace the world of big top hire this Halloween.

International Circus Stardust Entertainment is providing some much-needed entertainment to schoolchildren and their parents this summer in the form of bespoke circus schools and workshops.

The circus hire agency is staging a number of sessions at venues across the country – from school halls and back gardens to community centres and public green spaces.

Attendees will benefit from the expertise of professional circus performers as they learn circus skills such as juggling, tightrope walking, the diablo, the hula hoop and stilt walking.

Children are jumping at the opportunity to sign up to circus school, with young participants – and their parents – learning new skills that can boost their concentration levels and self esteem.

International Circus Stardust Entertainment, which offers a range of big top hire packages, is able to bring its workshop directly to its customers – with the circus school a perfect addition to a summer country fair, shopping centre or fun day.

Attendees who get a taste for circus acts can extend their interest by taking advantage of International Circus Stardust Entertainment’s circus hire packages, which allow for a spectacular show in a venue of the customer’s choosing.

For those who want a truly interactive experience with circus performers, though, a circus workshop is the obvious way to turn. Who knows, perhaps your child will become the next star of the big top?
